Redemption Hacks: Take Your Points Further

Free Night Awards & dynamic pricing

Dynamic pricing means point requirements vary by date and demand:

  • Fairfield in a Tier-2 Indian city: ~15,000 points/night (cash value ₹6,000–₹8,000).
  • JW Marriott or other luxury in metros: 40,000–60,000 points/night (cash value ₹15,000–₹25,000+).

Use the 5th Night Free Benefit

Redeem points for 5 nights, pay for 4 in points → effective 20% discount on total points needed for longer stays.

Transferring credit card points

  • Amex Membership Rewards → Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1.
  • Axis Bank, HSBC, and others → transfer in varying ratios.
  • Useful to top up for specific redemptions (e.g., adding 10,000–20,000 points for a luxury stay).

Redemption dos and don’ts

Dos

  • Politely ask for upgrades: Even as Member/Silver, request upgrades at check-in.
  • Use “Stay for 5, Pay for 4” smartly: Plan 5-night redemptions to get 20% effective discount.
  • Hunt high-value redemptions: Compare cash rate vs points needed to find >₹0.80/point situations.
  • Book well in advance: More chance of lower points requirement and better availability. Most bookings are flexible and cancellable.

Don’ts

  • Don’t redeem for low-value options: Avoid using points for on-property charges at 250 points = US $1 unless you must.
  • Don’t let points expire: Accounts with no activity for 24 months lose all points. Keep the account active by earning, redeeming, or buying points.

Note: Points for members with lifetime elite status never expire.

Club Marriott

Club Marriott is a paid dining and lifestyle membership program (separate from Marriott Bonvoy). Benefits include:

  • Up to 30% dining discounts
  • Up to 20% discount on best available room rate
  • Up to 20% discount on spa treatments

Benefits apply at participating hotels in the Asia Pacific region. You can often club Club Marriott benefits with Marriott Bonvoy benefits during stays.

Some premium credit cards provide complimentary Club Marriott membership, e.g.:

  • HDFC Bank Infinia Credit Card
  • HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Credit Card
  • Kotak White Reserve Credit Card

Family pooling

Family pooling allows families to combine points in one account for big redemptions.

  • Max 1,00,000 points can be transferred per year.
  • Max 5,00,000 points can be received per year.
  • Max 2 transfer transactions per month and 6 per year.
  • Minimum 1,000 points per transfer.

Family members can earn MB points separately and then transfer them to a single member who books the family vacation.

Pro Tips for Indian Travellers

1. Transfer points via Club ITC to Marriott

For Axis Bank Atlas Credit Card:

  • Atlas → partners: 1:2 for many, but 2:1 for Marriott Bonvoy.
  • Hack: transfer Atlas points to Club ITC (1:2), then Club ITC Green Points to MB (2:3).

Example:

  • 100 Axis Atlas points → direct to MB at 2:1 → 50 MB points.
  • 100 Atlas points → Club ITC at 1:2 → 200 Green Points → MB at 2:3 → 300 MB points.

2. Watch out for points transfer bonus offers

Amex frequently gives 10–30% bonus when transferring MR points to MB. Plan large transfers only when such offers are live.

3. Consider Marriott Moments

Marriott Bonvoy Moments can be especially valuable for Indian members during tie-ups like:

  • Sports (e.g., IPL team partnerships like Mumbai Indians)
  • Concerts, curated events, and VIP experiences

Is the Marriott Bonvoy program for you?

You can transfer credit card reward points to Marriott Bonvoy, redeem points for stays, dining, golf, spas, and experiences. The lifetime free Marriott Bonvoy program provides tremendous opportunities to earn and redeem points while doing what you love: travel.

Tips to Maximise Points

  • Use co-branded & partner credit cards: HDFC Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card, Amex Platinum, Axis/HSBC cards with transfer options.

  • Check promotions regularly: Look for double points, bonus nights, and property-specific offers in your MB account.
