What is a charge card?
Before we look at the features and benefits of the American Express Gold Charge Card, let us briefly understand
the concept of a charge card. A charge card allows you to pay for goods and services on credit with a credit
period of up to 50 days. However, a charge card doesn’t have a pre-set limit like a credit card. Also, once the
monthly bill is generated, the entire bill amount must be paid before or by the due date. In India, only American
Express issues charge cards in the following 2 variants:
- American Express Gold Charge Card
- American Express Platinum Charge Card
Now that we understand the basics of a charge card, let us dive deep into the features and benefits of the
American Express Gold Charge Card.
Fees & Benefits
The joining fee is Rs. 1,000 + Taxes.
The cardholder gets a welcome benefit or joining bonus of 4,000 Membership Rewards (MR) points on spending
Rs. 10,000 within 90 days of card membership.
The renewal fee is Rs. 4,500 + Taxes.
The cardholder doesn’t get any renewal benefit. Also, there is no criteria for waiver of annual fees based on the
previous year’s spends.
However, the cardholder can call American Express Customer Care to check for any retention offers. American Express
Customer Care usually gives some retention offers. Some of these offers include the following:
- Spend a specified amount within a specified number of days for full waiver of annual fee. For example, spend
Rs. 1,00,000 within 90 days and get the full annual fee waived. - Waiver on a specified percentage of the fees without any conditions. For example, a waiver of 50% of the annual
fee.
The card member can choose any of the above retention offers given by Customer Care, and accordingly get the entire
or partial fee waived. Not all members may get all of the above offers. These retention offers are not a part of
standard rules and hence, not documented anywhere on the American Express website. These offers are at the sole
discretion of American Express.
Rewards Structure
The Gold Charge Card holder can earn MR points through the following ways.
Regular reward earn rate
A cardholder earns 1 MR point for every Rs. 50 spent. Spends on fuel and insurance are excluded from earning MR
points. The Gold Charge Card gives MR points on utility bill payments. Some other American Express credit cards,
like the Membership Rewards Credit Card (MRCC) and Platinum Travel Credit Card, don’t give MR points on utility bill
payments.
Milestone reward points
A cardholder can earn bonus MR points by achieving the following spend-based monthly milestone.
| Spend-based milestone | Milestone benefits |
|---|---|
| 6 transactions of Rs. 1,000 or above in a calendar month | 1,000 MR points per month |
The MR points don’t have any validity date. Thus, they never expire. One of the USPs of American Express cards is
that their MR points never expire. So, the cardholder is free to accumulate and use them whenever required without
any deadline pressure of redeeming them.
Accelerated reward points with the Reward Multiplier (RM) platform
All American Express cardholders can earn accelerated reward points with the Reward Multiplier platform. An
American Express Gold Charge Card holder can earn 5X reward points for spends through the RM platform. It means,
instead of the regular 1 MR point, the cardholder will earn 5 MR points for every Rs. 50 spent through the RM
platform.
The cardholder can use the RM platform for shopping at merchants/websites under various categories, such as:
| Merchant category | Merchants |
|---|---|
| Marketplace | Flipkart, Myntra, etc. |
| Travel | MakeMyTrip |
| Electronics | Apple, Croma, Samsung, etc. |
| Fashion | Tanishq, Aurelia, Puma, etc. |
| Beauty | Forest Essentials, Kama Ayurveda, etc. |
The cardholder can use the RM platform to purchase gift cards of 100s of online/offline brands under various
categories. The cardholder can get instant discounts (if any) and earn 5X points on the gift vouchers.

The maximum number of bonus MR Points that can be earned through the RM platform is capped at 25,000 bonus MR Points
per month. The bonus MR Points are credited to the card account within 120 business days from the date of the valid
transaction made on the merchant website/platform.
There is a monthly purchase limit for Amazon Pay Gift Card, Amazon Shopping Voucher, and Flipkart Gift Voucher. A
cardholder (primary and supplementary) can purchase a maximum of Rs. 10,000 worth of vouchers for each of the three
individual brands in a calendar month. A 1.5% convenience fee + GST is charged on the purchase of Amazon Pay and
Amazon Shopping gift vouchers on the RM platform.
Certain transactions are excluded from earning bonus MR points on the RM platform. These can be checked at:

Extra rewards on Reward Multiplier
From time to time, American Express comes out with offers that reward cardholders with extra MR points for
transactions done through the Reward Multiplier platform. For example, American Express ran an offer from 24th to
28th January 2025 as part of Republic Day celebrations.
As per the offer, the cardholder got 25 MR points for every Rs. 100 spent across brands/merchants listed on the
Reward Multiplier platform. During such offers, the ongoing 5X MR points on the Gold Charge Card are not applicable.
E-vouchers/Gift vouchers purchased through the e-Voucher platform (Gyftr) on Reward Multiplier are not a part of
this offer.
From time to time, American Express keeps coming out with similar bonus MR points offers for the RM platform,
insurance premium payment transactions, etc. Participation in these offers is voluntary and may require prior
registration.
Purchasing MR points from American Express
A cardholder can purchase MR points from American Express at the rate of Rs. 0.40 per MR point. A maximum of 10,000
MR points can be purchased in a calendar year. The amount is charged to the cardholder’s account.
Reward Redemption
The MR points earned with the Gold Charge Card can be redeemed in the following ways:
- Gold Collection
- Transfer to partners
- Purchase of INSTA Vouchers
- Payment of online transactions
These MR points redemption options can be accessed from the ‘Rewards & Benefits’ section of the Dashboard.
Gold Collection
The Gold Collection redemption option is exclusive to Gold Charge Card and Membership Rewards Credit Card (MRCC)
holders. It has 2 options: 18 Karat Gold Collection and 24 Karat Gold Collection.
18 Karat Gold Collection
Under the 18K Gold Collection, a Gold Charge Card holder can redeem 18,000 MR points for the following:
| Gift Voucher | Value per MR point |
|---|---|
| Taj voucher worth Rs. 9,000 | Rs. 0.50 |
| Shoppers Stop voucher worth Rs. 7,000 | Rs. 0.39 |
| Tata CLiQ voucher worth Rs. 7,000 | Rs. 0.39 |
| Myntra voucher worth Rs. 7,000 | Rs. 0.39 |

| Flipkart voucher worth Rs. 6,000 | Rs. 0.33 |
| Reliance Digital voucher worth Rs. 6,000 | Rs. 0.33 |
24 Karat Gold Collection
Under the 24K Gold Collection, a Gold Charge Card holder can redeem 24,000 reward points for the following:
| Gift Voucher | Value per MR point |
|---|---|
| Taj voucher worth Rs. 14,000 | Rs. 0.58 |
| Shoppers Stop voucher worth Rs. 10,000 | Rs. 0.42 |
| Tata CLiQ voucher worth Rs. 9,000 | Rs. 0.37 |
| Tanishq Diamond Jewellery voucher worth Rs. 9,000 | Rs. 0.37 |
| Amazon voucher worth Rs. 8,000 | Rs. 0.33 |
| Flipkart voucher worth Rs. 8,000 | Rs. 0.33 |
| Reliance Digital voucher worth Rs. 8,000 | Rs. 0.33 |
The above table shows how a Gold Charge Card holder can get a redemption value ranging from Rs. 0.33 to Rs. 0.58 per
MR point under the Gold Collection.
Transfer partners
American Express has a tie-up with various airline and hotel partners for the transfer of MR points.
| Transfer partner | Transfer ratio |
|---|---|
| Asia Miles | 2 MR points = 1 Asia Miles |
| British Airways Executive Club | 2 MR points = 1 Avios |
| Etihad Guest | 2 MR points = 1 Etihad Guest Miles |
| Qatar Privilege Club | 2 MR points = 1 Avios |
| Singapore KrisFlyer | 2 MR points = 1 KrisFlyer Miles |
| Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | 2 MR points = 1 Virgin Points |
| Hilton Honors | 10 MR points = 9 Hilton Honors Points |
| Marriott Bonvoy | 1 MR point = 1 Marriott Bonvoy Point |
From the above list, the Singapore KrisFlyer and Marriott Bonvoy transfers are popular among American Express
cardholders in India.
Purchase of INSTA Vouchers
The cardholder can redeem MR points to purchase INSTA Vouchers of more than 100 online and offline brands. The
redemption value is Rs. 0.25 per MR point.
Payment of online transactions
Payment for online transactions can be done using MR points. The redemption value is Rs. 0.25 per MR point.
From the above-discussed redemption options, transferring MR points to partners like Singapore KrisFlyer and
Marriott Bonvoy can give good redemption value. For example, the points requirement for booking a hotel room
through the Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty program is dynamic. The cardholder usually gets a redemption value of
Rs. 0.50 to Rs. 1.0 per point. However, at times, they can get a higher redemption value.
Similarly, the Gold Collection vouchers give a decent redemption value of up to Rs. 0.58 per MR point.

How to earn a more than 15% reward rate
The American Express Gold Charge Card gives the best reward rate when used for spends of Rs. 72,000 in a year
(Rs. 6,000 per month). The Rs. 6,000 monthly spend must be broken down into 6 transactions of Rs. 1,000 or more per
month.
You can earn a reward rate in the 10 to 15% range and enjoy free stays at Taj properties every year for an annual
spend of Rs. 72,000. Let us consider the following 3 scenarios.
Earn a 10% reward rate with all spends outside of the Rewards Multiplier platform
When you spend Rs. 72,000 (Rs. 1,000 × 6 transactions per month) in a year with the Gold Charge Card, you get the
following benefits:
- Base reward rate: 1 MR point for every Rs. 50 spent =
120 MR points per month × 12 months = 1,440 MR points per year - 6 transactions every month of Rs. 1,000 or more =
1,000 MR points/month × 12 months = 12,000 MR points in a year
Total = 13,440 MR points.
Under the 24 Karat Gold Collection, the MR points can be redeemed against Taj vouchers at the rate of Rs. 0.58 per
MR point. Thus, the 13,440 MR points can be redeemed for Taj vouchers of Rs. 7,795.
The redemption value of Rs. 7,795 on annual spends of Rs. 72,000 translates into a reward rate of 10.82%.
Note: Taj vouchers can only be redeemed in denominations of Rs. 14,000 against 24,000 MR points. If a card member
wants to buy more than one Taj voucher of Rs. 14,000 each, they will have to redeem in multiples of 24,000 MR
points.
Earn a 13% reward rate with 50% of annual spends through the Rewards Multiplier platform
Suppose a person spends 50% of Rs. 72,000 annual spends through the Reward Multiplier platform. The reward rate will
increase to 13.15% as follows:
- Base reward rate for Rs. 36,000 spends: 1 MR point for every Rs. 50 spent = 720 MR points
- Accelerated reward rate for Rs. 36,000 spends through Reward Multiplier platform:
5 MR points for every Rs. 50 spent = 3,600 MR points - 6 transactions every month of Rs. 1,000 or more = 1,000 MR points/month × 12 months = 12,000 MR points
Total = 16,320 MR points.
Under the 24 Karat Gold Collection, the MR points can be redeemed against Taj vouchers at the rate of Rs. 0.58 per
MR point. Thus, the 16,320 MR points can be redeemed for Taj vouchers of Rs. 9,465.
The redemption value of Rs. 9,465 on annual spends of Rs. 72,000 translates into a reward rate of 13.15%.
Earn a 15% reward rate with 100% of annual spends through the Rewards Multiplier platform
Suppose a person spends the entire Rs. 72,000 annual spends through the Reward Multiplier platform. The reward rate
will increase to 15.47% as follows:
- Accelerated reward rate for Rs. 72,000 spends through Reward Multiplier platform:
5 MR points for every Rs. 50 spent = 7,200 MR points - 6 transactions every month of Rs. 1,000 or more = 1,000 MR points/month × 12 months = 12,000 MR points
Total = 19,200 MR points.
Under the 24 Karat Gold Collection, the MR points can be redeemed against Taj vouchers at the rate of Rs. 0.58 per
MR point. Thus, the 19,200 MR points can be redeemed for Taj vouchers of Rs. 11,136.
The redemption value of Rs. 11,136 on annual spends of Rs. 72,000 translates into a reward rate of 15.47%.
Summary of Spending Scenarios
| Spending pattern | Reward rate |
|---|---|
| Entire Rs. 72,000 annual spends outside of the RM platform | 10.82% |
| 50% of the Rs. 72,000 annual spends through the RM platform | 13.15% |
| 100% of the Rs. 72,000 annual spends through the RM platform | 15.47% |
The above table assumes spends of Rs. 72,000 (Rs. 6,000 per month spread across 6 transactions of Rs. 1,000 each) in
a year.
How to Apply
The eligibility criteria includes the following:
- The applicant must be over 18 years of age.
- Must have a savings or current account in India.
- Must have a good credit history and no payment defaults.
- A permanent residential address in India.
- Must reside in one of the cities in which American Express credit cards are issued.
The applicant, whether salaried or self-employed, must have a personal annual income of Rs. 6 lakhs or above. If you
apply online through a referral (existing American Express cardholder), you will get a referral bonus of 2,000 MR
points.
Optimal Use
The American Express Gold Charge Card is best for annual spends of Rs. 72,000 (Rs. 6,000 monthly spends with 6
transactions of Rs. 1,000 or above per month). For annual spends above Rs. 72,000, the reward rate falls. Hence, to
optimise the card benefits, use it for annual spends of Rs. 72,000. Beyond that, you may switch spends to another
American Express credit card, like the Platinum Travel Credit Card or Membership Rewards Credit Card.
Bonus Tips & Insider Hacks
From time to time, American Express sends spend-based offers. For example, during Diwali, American Express sends a
festive spend-based offer every year. When the cardholder spends the specified amount during the specified period,
they get rewarded with bonus vouchers from brands like Taj, Amazon, Flipkart, etc. These spend-based offers enhance
the overall reward rate by 2 to 5%.
American Express runs campaigns related to the Reward Multiplier platform. For example, a campaign may offer 5 to 25
MR points for every Rs. 100 spent through the Reward Multiplier platform. During such offers, the usual 5X MR points
offer doesn’t apply. Some campaigns are spend-based. For example, a campaign may offer a specified amount gift card
for spending a specified amount through the Reward Multiplier platform.
All the above offers boost the overall return rate on the American Express Gold Charge Card. As discussed earlier,
the Gold Charge Card is good for annual spends of Rs. 72,000. Beyond that, the cardholder may switch to another Amex
card(s).

limit, giving the user the much-needed freedom and flexibility to spend.

The Gold Charge Card provides MR points on utility bill payments. Earlier, the Gold Charge Card gave MR points on
